Green Standard Schools is a new, not-for-profit association that has been established in order to encourage the adoption of rigorous environmental standards across the language teaching sector.

Our aims are:

• To lessen the impact that language teaching has on the environment by developing a set of policies and practices that language teaching institutions and their stakeholders can adopt and adhere to.

• To award accreditation against these policies and practices to providers of language education everywhere.

• To develop resources designed to encourage environmental sustainability.

This talk will outline the thinking behind the association and how the accreditation system works.

What are Green Standard Schools and how can your school become an accredited GSS?

Jonathan Dykes started as an English teacher but soon moved into language school management. He has been responsible for starting several new schools in various different countries, as well as Net Languages, one of the world’s first virtual language schools. He was also one of the founders of the ECO Association Green Standard Schools.

  1. It was an interesting presentation. Raising awareness on environmental issues is a one of the key things we need to implement in education from an early age as we do not have a spare planet to move to if we manage to destroy the one where we live. So the idea of encouraging schools to develop a network with the same green mission is a great one! Thank you for your presentation!
